I'm Becoming an Emotional Being
Listening to: Yes Nice - BlindfoldedIt may be partially a result of the combination of my association with and respect for the members of Yes Nice, but so far, I really, really love their newest record. I know I'm not a credible source of excellent music reviews and critiques, but there it is. Love it. (Especially the latter half of 'Empty Space', good grief, almost weeping.)

3 things:
I have to admit that I've been listening to these songs somewhat obsessively on Myspace for the last few weeks and I'm very excited about finally being able to give the band real money. (I imagine they would take it had I offered). I recognize, like you, that part of my enjoyment of the music may derive from knowing the music-makers. That said, I would hope we can trust our instincts sufficiently to be able to tell the difference between good and bad lyrics, good and bad melodies, good and bad arrangements, good and bad production: these songs are remarkable for just how good they are across the board. I particularly appreciate their lyrical complexity (so far as I can make out the lyrics, which -- as the best do -- become at times another layer of instrumentation and tone). Seriously, I could listen to "Water Wine" over and over and over.
I think that you can tell the difference between good and bad music. And really....after ALL the studying I have done of music I have found that some things considered artistic masterpieces for their "pushing the boundaries-esque" composition still don't move my soul and yet a simple Ian Tyson song can move me to tears. And yet there is perhaps brilliance in that simplicity too.
The cliche here would be "beauty is in the eye/ear of the beholder".
Luckily, in this case, Yes Nice happens to have moving beauty and well put together songs, in the artistic brilliance type thing.
Well that was a lot of rambling. I just want to say that we can be objective about music but it is so subjective at the same time and that it doesn't really matter if it is - either way it is still beautiful.
I don't know if this has made any sense.
