Daytona Splendor - A Thesis (Part Two)

Listening to: Various Artists - The OC Mix 2
This is a continuation of the previous post, and part 2 in what will probably be an interconnected series of posts for each of the 6 OC Mixes. Great!

So, here's how it goes: In grade 9, the world of The Simpsons was, effectively, our world. The way we saw it, everything we needed to know we learned in grade 9, watching The Simpsons. It became our conversations, we couldn't talk without someone throwing in a reference every 5 minutes. At the time, we loved it. We ate that shit up. I recall one specific instance in which Nathan Binnema, a genuinely nice guy, yet the nerdy outcast-type of the class, responded to a question from our teacher with the phrase, "Eat My Shorts". From that moment on, Nathan Binnema attained a sort of cult-hero status amongst the males of the class. Those three simple words vaulted him into the upper echelons of coolness in our class. No one really hung out with him very often, but the teasing and talking behind his back came to a halt. He became somewhat larger-than-life in a very enigmatic way, because we were still very much confused by him. When it came down to it though, at his core, we knew who that kid was. He was us. We were him. And we, all of us, had Matt Groening to thank for that.

I suppose this state of being lasted pretty much through high school, with supplementary sources, such as Zoolander, some of the Austin Powers movies, and Family Guy peppered amongst our Simpsons vocabulary. And that's how we liked it. We were sort of losers.

Timeout. The second OC Mix is definitely my favorite of the group of them, and not a bad mix CD at all. It's got some of my favorite bands, and some really great songs. I thoroughly approve the listening to of this album.

"we couldn't talk without someone throwing in a reference every 5 minutes" - this is so true. it's weird to think how much we used to quote the simpsons and yet somewhere.....somehow...it stopped. I would be interested to hear when, where, or why you think it stopped.

I will answer that question. Though I'm not sure how.

I found that I stopped when I started hanging out with people that were older, wiser than I, and I wanted not to look the fool, quoting some childish TV cartoon.

Nah, that's not even remotely true.

Let's all let that question percolate for a while, shall we?
